Murray River Seed Co.-Junior Plant Breeder (Full Time)

of the Murray River in Albury, NSW, Australia.
The company is founded by vegetable seed industry professionals who strive to do things differently,
with agility and a true customer focus. Combining science with an entrepreneurial spirit allows
Murray River Seed Co. to bring innovative products to our customers around the world.
We are seeking an exceptional person to take up the newly created position of Junior Plant Breeder.


RESPONSIBILITIES
• Responsible for a part of the Melon breeding program with harvest indicators
• Work closely with company leadership and the Principal Plant Breeder, to translate market needs
and future trends into vision and breeding targets. Create new innovative products!
• Assist with the evaluation of trials, analysis of the phenotypic data from fields and greenhouses,
and selection for watermelon and melon
• Interpret molecular marker results for selection
• Optimisation of breeding schemes for traits improvement (e.g. enhance disease resistance and
quality traits)
• Collaborate with external team of breeding software, genetic, off-season, and other service providers
• Provide scientific support to research projects in collaboration with several private and public organisations
• Supervise, train, and manage seasonal field workers
• Develop and maintain close contacts with sales, growers, seed producers and other seed
industry stakeholders’


REQUIRED
• PhD or M.Sc. or B.Sc. with focus on plant breeding, genetics, or related discipline
• Excellent organisational skills, self-motivated, independent, positive and can-do attitude, fast thinker,
and act with integrity
• Good knowledge of statistics and its use for selection (essential) and background in Quantitative Genetics
• Experience with the use of molecular markers for marker assisted selection
• Experience in the analysis of large datasets as well as experience or ability to learn growing practices for
watermelon, melon, and other crops
• Ability to work accurately and systematically both in the office and in the field
• Ability to undertake significant travel in Australia and Internationally (30%)
• Ability to adapt to the seasonal fluctuations required for breeding and attendance for travelling
• Excellent computer skills, ability to find and apply “off the shelf” data management tools, MS Office
applications, Label printing and have the desire to learn new software programs
• Good English language skills, fluency in Spanish is also highly valued
• Team player and excellent communication skills
• Current drivers licence
• Must provide proof of authorisation to work in Australia
