Education

The technical nature of plant breeding and seed production requires a highly educated workforce. A key goal of the SBC has been to provide ongoing education for professionals in the seed industry. In alternate years since 2001, the SBC has offered Seed Biology, Production and Quality, a two and a half-day course for both beginning and experienced seed professionals.

In alternate years since 2004, we have also offered Breeding with Molecular Markers, a two-day course providing information on how to incorporate molecular markers into a plant breeding program.

A new course being offered, Seed Business 101SM includes 5 days of instruction designed to enhance each participant's career performance within the seed industry. See Field or Horticulture for information.

Discussions with seed industry executives made us aware of the increasing shortage of plant breeders, so in 2006 the SBC established the Plant Breeding Academy (PBA), a two-year course that develops professional plant breeders while they continue to work in their current jobs.

Our team also offers customized classes tailored to meet our stakeholder’s specific needs. Click here to let us know what type of training could best serve you and your employees and we can design a class to address it.
